Jeremy O'Keefe is a professor at New York University, recently returned after a decade of living in England. Though happy to live near his daughter again, Jeremy feels himself a man out of place, invisible in a city of strangers. But a series of disturbing incidents makes it clear that he is in fact being closely watched. He receives a package in the mail containing his complete browsing history; his mother receives phone calls slandering him; and he thinks that he sees a masked man looking into his window at night. As the threats and intrusions mount, Jeremy is forced to consider if he is losing his mind or if he has unwittingly committed a crime so great as to make him an enemy of the state.
